Discourses on the Five Principles - Principle Four

Just for today I will do my work honestly. On the face of it this seems pretty straightforward. I have work to do- occupation, homework, yard work - and I am going to do it the best I can. This understanding of the fourth principle is important. Our attention to the mundane tasks that adorn our days can become the foundation of practice and provide an expanded understanding of our connection to all beings. It also offers opportunity for compassionate action. Today, do your labors attentively. Be present. Breathe and work. Work and pay attention. As the old Zen saying goes, "Before enlightenment. Chop wood, Carry water."

This principle also offer us the chance to look more broadly at the issue of personal integrity. It tells us to engage in daily reflection on our actions, not with the intent of judging ourselves but with the intent of shedding delusions and illusions. Who are we in the incarnation? What is our purpose? Do we really live in a manner that fosters peace and compassion in the world? Take the time to cultivate a mindful awareness of your daily life. Be aware, be honest, live with intergrity.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly. I vow to live with integrity in all my relations.
